It’s Time to Give Chickens More Respect

            For years chickens have been given a bum rap. They are the subject of countless jokes about crossing the road, being afraid and enduring questionable parentage. Do we really care which came first?  The chicken or the egg? To our family, chickens are, well, family.  All 10 of them. They cluck around our back yard to the delight of the neighborhood children who flock to see them daily. In fact, each of our children and some of their friends “own” each one. So why did we devote the use of our Pack ‘N Play to nurture 10 newly hatched chicks for months? And then convert our son’s playhouse into a chicken coop? It’s all about giving grace to nature. We feed the best grains we can to our hens. No GMOs for these ladies! In turn, we get free range chicken eggs, one of the best sources of protein you can find. We are also assured of eating antibiotic-free eggs packed with Vitamin A, E and Beta Carotene. This is a pretty sweet bonus since the nation is starting to face an egg shortage. I have to admit that I love watching our chickens dance around our backyard. They don’t exactly do the chicken dance, but they actually look like they are having fun strutting around. They are very social, smart and true extroverts. That’s probably why I find them wandering into our house so often. Whoever thought that owning chickens would give us natural weed eaters and grass mowers, not to mention gratis fertilizer! And you thought the only benefit was eggs, didn’t you!
